As a result of the USSR placing SS-20 intermediate-range missiles in the 1970s, the United States began to call for controls on the use of intermediate-range missiles. In 1987, their calls were heeded and a treaty was signed that required the two world powers to destroy all of their nuclear and non-nuclear ground launched ballistic and cruise missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. They also swore never to create or use such weapons again. Since then, the treaty has not been broken and the two governments destroyed a total of 2,692 missiles in accordance to the treaty.
